The Flag of Northumberland stands as a vibrant emblem of pride and heritage, showcasing the rich history and cultural significance of this remarkable region. With its striking colors and bold design, this flag evokes a sense of unity and strength among its people, reflecting the spirit of a land steeped in tradition and natural beauty. Whether fluttering in the breeze or proudly displayed at gatherings, the Flag of Northumberland inspires a deep connection to the past while celebrating the enduring legacy of its inhabitants. It serves as a powerful symbol for those who cherish their roots and honor the distinct identity of their homeland.

The flag of Northumberland features eight vertical stripes alternating between red and gold, symbolizing the ancient kingdom of Bernicia, which merged with Deira to form Northumbria in the 7th century. This design is rooted in a banner described by the Venerable Bede, England's first historian, who noted a gold and purple banner over St. Oswald's tomb. In the Middle Ages, these colors were adopted by the first Earl of Northumberland. The modern flag, granted to Northumberland County Council in 1951, interlocks the stripes to represent the interlocking stones of Hadrian's Wall, emphasizing the county's role as a border region. In 1995, the council permitted the flag's use throughout the county, honoring a 1,200-year tradition associated with the red and gold colors.

Thanks to the quality of this representative flag, you show your close connection to Northumberland.
