The flag of Maranhão features nine horizontal stripes—four white, three red, and two black—interspersed to represent the state's diverse ethnic groups: Indigenous, Black, and White Brazilians. In the upper hoist corner, a blue canton occupies one-third of the flag's length and half its width, containing a white five-pointed star symbolizing Maranhão's place in the Brazilian federation. This star corresponds to Beta Scorpii, reflecting the constellation Scorpius depicted on Brazil's national flag. Designed by poet Joaquim de Souza Andrade, the flag was adopted on December 21, 1889.
